I’ve finally lost my mind when it comes to my dishwasher. Over the past six months I’ve spent so much time and energy (and money) trying to figure out why my dishwasher has not been cleaning my dishes properly.
It goes something like this:
1. Dirty the dishes
2. Rinse them off with hot tap water
3. Run the dishwasher
4. Cry because the dishes are either still partially dirty or the glassware is cloudy
5. Hand-wash everything
Because I do a lot of baking and spend countless hours in the kitchen, having a functional dishwasher and a really effective dishwasher detergent is imperative. I don’t know about you but hand-washing dishes after they have come out of the dishwasher isn’t my idea of a good time and kinda counter-intuitive. Don’t you think?
So like the research queen that I am, I dove right into the Google to check out some homemade solutions for dishwasher detergent. There were many, many adaptations but most of them followed the same basic recipe which is this:
Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
1 cup of borax
1 cup of washing soda
1/2 cup of salt
1/2 cup of lemi-shine
(optional 10-20 drops of essential oils)
Use 1 Tblsp per load and add one or two drops of dishsoap to the mix but no more than two. Also, add a splash of vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher just before you close the door.
This weekend I gathered up all of the ingredients and decided to make a batch to test.
Results to date have been nothing short of uh-mazing. No cloudy glasses, no dirt left behind.
I’m going to do some math this coming week to figure out the savings involved by making my own dishwasher detergent but I’m going to bet it is huge.
What do you think? Would you try this recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent out for yourself? If you do, would love to hear how it works for you!
